Forest Lake teens 'expected to make a full recovery' after being struck on Highway 61

Both boys are Forest Lake track athletes and were crossing the highway with a group of runners shortly after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

FOREST LAKE, Minn. — The two teens struck by a vehicle earlier this week while crossing Highway 61 are “expected to make a full recovery,” according to an official with Forest Lake Area Schools.

Both boys are Forest Lake track athletes and were crossing the highway with a group of runners shortly after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Minnesota State Patrol identified the two teens as Samuel Farinella and Jase Blacnhard, both 15 years old.

“We are relieved to share that the two Forest Lake Area High School students who were struck by a car on Tuesday, April 30 are currently recuperating at the hospital and are expected to make a full recovery," district communications coordinator Renae Reedy said in a statement.

According to state patrol, Farinella and Blanchard were crossing Highway 61 at a crosswalk near 202nd Street North when they were struck by a vehicle being driven by an 84-year-old man from Lindström, Minnesota. Officials say Farinella and Blanchard were airlifted and are currently being treated at Regions Hospital.

The State Patrol continues to investigate but says they don't believe alcohol played a factor. Once the investigation is complete, officials says the case will be forwarded to the county attorney who will then determine if any charges will be filed.
