Inmate-on-inmate assault at Oak Park Heights prison leaves 1 seriously injured

The assault happened Friday, when an inmate allegedly punched and repeatedly kicked another inmate.

OAK PARK HEIGHTS, Minn. — The Minnesota Department of Corrections says an inmate has suffered potentially life-threatening injuries after being assaulted by another inmate at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Oak Park Heights.

According to a news release, the assault happened on Friday, Nov. 8. Corrections officers were called to help canteen staff following reports of an assault. Officers found a 59-year-old inmate unresponsive and bleeding from the head. He was treated on site by medical personnel before being taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

The release states the suspect in the assault is a 22-year-old inmate. A preliminary investigation shows the suspect punched the victim, who then fell and hit his head. Investigators said the suspect then kicked the victim in the head several times. The motive for the attack is not clear.

The suspect is now being held in "administrative segregation" while corrections staff work to complete their investigation.
