Last-minute fundraiser collects $55k for family of MPD Officer Jamal Mitchell

According to The Front Line Foundation, $55,000 was paid directly to Mitchell's loved ones following a last-minute effort -- in partnership with Purpose Restaurants.

MINNEAPOLIS — The community came out in a big way for the family of fallen Minneapolis Police Officer Jamal Mitchell last weekend, helping to raise tens of thousands of dollars in what organizers called an "unprecedented" showing of support.

According to The Front Line Foundation, $55,000 in death benefits was paid directly to Mitchell's loved ones following a last-minute effort -- in partnership with Purpose Restaurants -- that inspired thousands to contribute.

“The speed at which this incredible event came together is amazing and a testament to the commitment all parties have for supporting our first responders,” said Suzane Holt, CEO and president of TFLF. “The public’s response to this was incredible. We could not have done it without their unbelievable support and the support of Chef Brian.”

Brian Ingram, a local chef and restaurateur, volunteered his Apostle Supper Club in St. Paul to host an event on Saturday, in which 100% of the proceeds from sales were donated directly to Mitchell's family. Mitchell, 36, left behind a fiancé and four kids.

“First responders are at the heart of what makes our community strong. We owe it to them to show our support and do all we can to bring attention to the work they do and the sacrifices they make on a daily basis to protect us,” said Ingram in a statement, adding that partnering with TFLF was an easy choice. “The Front Line Foundation is doing great things, and we are pleased to work with them on this.”

In a press release from TFLF Tuesday morning, officials said more than 3,000 people contributed to the Apostle's June 1 sales.

“Nobody wants to have events like this, because it means tragedy has struck, but we are encouraged to know this organization is willing and able to help show significant support immediately,” said Ingram of TFLF.

Mitchell died in the line of duty on Thursday, May 30, while responding to a call about gunfire. When he arrived on the scene, authorities said he approached a gunshot wound victim, who would end up firing multiple rounds at Mitchell, ultimately killing him. The shooter, Mustafa Mohammed, was also killed.

In addition to Saturday's event, a GoFundMe was also set up to support Mitchell's family. If you're interested in donating, visit the campaign here. According to the site, nearly $80,000 has already been collected toward its $100,000 goal.
