MAPLE GROVE, Minn. — As soon as the clock strikes midnight, the race is on for the first baby. Not that the mothers are trying to beat a record or anything, but as the joyful bundles arrive on January 1st, it's always a sweet treat to find out who may have been first in the metro.
Last year, North Memorial Health Maple Grove Hospital welcomed Isabelle Alice Koopman who was born at exactly 12 a.m. on Jan. 1. This year, the same hospital delivered baby Cyrus, who arrived to parents Dao Her and Thao Xiong at just 20 minutes after midnight.
"We got to the hospital around 11:30 and with all the paperwork and we went to the room and it just took around like 20 minutes for the baby to come out," Her said.
Her explained Cyrus was her fifth baby, but said she felt like his pregnancy was the longest. She also said this isn't the fastest she's delivered her children.
"No, my previous ones were in thirty minutes," Her said.
And while she was expecting him on New Year's Day, she didn't expect he'd be first...at least in the Metro to the best of our knowledge.
"I was like, 'Oh yeah, maybe he might be born January 1st,' but I didn't expect him to be the first one!," Her said.
