MINNEAPOLIS — The Minneapolis Police Department released body-worn camera (BWC) video from the May 30 shooting that killed Officer Jamal Mitchell and a separate police shooting on June 12, during a news conference at the Minneapolis Public Service Building on Friday morning.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said he released the videos because he wanted the public to see them as soon as possible. O'Hara said videos are part of active criminal investigations by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA). Some parts of the videos were redacted.
"I believe the actions displayed by our officers in these instances were reasonable and necessary considering the threats that were being posed. Our police officers performed courageously to protect our community," said O'Hara before he played the videos to members of the media.
Mitchell's watch ended on Thursday, May 30, while responding to a call reporting gunfire in Minneapolis' Whittier neighborhood. When he arrived on the scene, authorities said he approached a gunshot wound victim who would end up firing multiple rounds at Mitchell, ultimately killing him. The shooter, Mustafa Mohammed, was also killed.
In a separate incident on Wednesday, June 12, three Minneapolis police officers shot and killed a man who witnesses say was waving a gun and behaving strangely in the Longfellow neighborhood on the city's south side.
MPD said officers Enoch Langford, Abdirizaq Mumin and Chaz Wilson fired their department handguns after responding to a report of a person being threatened by a man with a gun. Police say the officers ordered the man repeatedly to drop his weapon, and shots were fired after a confrontation.
