For the second time, the City of Minneapolis is postponing plans to evict residents of a homeless encampment located on the city's south side.
A spokesperson for the city said it is looking to further partner with Hennepin County, the State of Minnesota and other social service providers before closing the Ventura Village encampment, also known as Camp Nenookaasi.
"To account for the time needed to find these potential options, the planned Dec. 19 closure has been postponed," said Sarah McKenzie, media relations coordinator for the city.
The postponement is a major victory for advocates and organizers of the camp who held a press conference on Thursday asking the city to delay its planned clearing.
Thursday was the original deadline for people to leave the encampment before that timeline was extended to Dec. 19. Organizers had asked for another postponement until the city provides more alternative living options for the people living in the camp.
"Once we have a plan in place with those partners, the closure will happen because we need to address the ongoing public health and safety issues at the encampment, including a fatal shooting in the encampment this week," added McKenzie in the release.
Minneapolis Police said a 45-year-old man was fatally shot multiple times at the camp earlier this week.
