5 tips for healthy and happy family holidays

Holidays can be filled with joy and stress, and experts recommend giving yourself permission to feel both!

MINNETONKA, Minn. — The holiday season is a time filled with joy but also, for many people, stress.

Experts say you can give yourself permission to feel both.

Dr. Abigail Miller, Chief Medical Officer at UnitedHealthcare, joined KARE 11 News at Noon to offer these five tips for a happy and healthy holiday.

No is a full sentence

"You have to say no to a lot of great things to live a great life," Dr. Miller said. "Give yourself permission to say no."

Make time for your health and wellness

"Continue your work-out routine, eat healthy foods, decline dessert," Dr. Miller said. She recommends avoiding overindulgence like empty calories

Plan ahead

"Create to do lists, ask for support, make boundaries," Dr. Miller suggests. "Empower yourself to create new traditions if past plans haven't worked."

Tune out social media if it creates unpleasant feelings

"Mute people, delete the app, the perfect lifestyle isn't real," she said.

Acts of Kindness

"Take a day to go through closets, toys, etc and donate items," Dr. Miller suggested. "Volunteer, adopt a family."
