'Purple Rain' 40th-anniversary event planned at Target Center

The iconic film will be screened at center court and memorabilia from the movie will be on display.

MINNEAPOLIS — Everything's coming up purple at Target Center later this month.

The arena is set to host a special celebration in honor of the 40th Anniversary of Prince's iconic film, "Purple Rain" on July 27, exactly four decades after the movie was first released in theaters.

Fans can watch a special one-time anniversary screening of the film at center court, and check out memorabilia from the film on display.

"We are thrilled to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Purple Rain, a film that continues to resonate with audiences worldwide," said Prince's sister, Sharon L. Nelson, in a statement. "This event is a heartfelt tribute to Prince's unparalleled talent and the lasting impact of his artistry."

Prince performed multiple times at Target Center during his career and was frequently seen in the crowds cheering on the Minnesota Timberwolves and Minnesota Lynx.

Tickets are available for $19.99 - priced in honor of Prince's popular hit of the same name. A special VIP experience is also available for $199.99.

It's the latest special event marking the 40th anniversary of "Purple Rain" this year: Paisley Park hosted a multi-day celebration in June; Prince's former band The Revolution had two special shows last month at First Avenue, the venue made internationally famous by the film. Also, the Minneapolis house featured in the film is also available as a special Airbnb rental, and a stage production of "Purple Rain" is planned at the State Theatre next year.
