ST PAUL, Minn — A Ramsey County judge has certified a 17-year-old implicated in a murder case to be tried as an adult.

The certification comes after 16-year-old Kalven Sin Suy was fatally shot in St. Paul on Feb 10.

St. Paul police officers were called to 872 Western Ave. N. around 1 a.m. on a report of a shooting. When they arrived, an officer found Suy suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to the hospital for emergency surgery, but died over just over a week later from his wounds.

Charging documents said that just before the shooting occurred, Suy asked the person he had been with that day to drive him to the intersection of Western Avenue North and Burgess Street in St. Paul.

Within minutes of being dropped off at the intersection, Suy called the driver back, telling them, "come get me, he shot me."

The driver later told police Suy had gone to meet someone and had taken a Christmas-themed bag with him.

When Suy was found after being shot, the bag was no longer with him.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for Suy's phone and determined that it was being used to communicate with a 17-year-old male on the day of the shooting.

SPPD investigators executed a search warrant on the teen's residence, where prosecutor's said officers located Suy's Christmas-themed bag and multiple firearms which had been tampered with in a manner to erase their serial numbers.

The criminal complaint said the driver told investigators that Suy sometimes sold marijuana, and when officers looked through the text exchange between Suy and the other teem, they found several messages detailing the sale of a gun and narcotics.

The suspect told investigators he had nothing to say when he was questioned, according to the complaint.

Suy was pronounced dead on Feb. 18 and his manner of death was listed as a homicide by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office.
