Voters on municipal elections: 'That's where it all starts'

Officials said they've seen a steady flow of voters in Tuesday's municipal elections, despite it being an off-year election.

MINNEAPOLIS — Across the state, voters cast their ballots in-person on Election Day Tuesday, weighing in on issues ranging from city council and school board races to taxes.

One of the voters at the polls included St. Paul resident Jessica Evjen, who emphasized the important of participating in her local election.

“Most change can be done at the local level,” she said

Jeff Elston, also a St. Paul resident, said he felt the same.

”That’s where it all starts — locally. I want to have a say of some kind in who’s representing me in St. Paul,” said Elston.

“I have kids in Saint Paul Public Schools, so the school board election is particularly important to me,” said Kate Hannaher, who voted at the city's Martin Luther King Recreation Center.

Sarah Moe of Minneapolis said she recently moved to her voting precinct. She voted at Bryn Mawr Elementary School.

“It’s our civic duty,” said Moe. ”We’re actually very lucky, privileged, honored to be able to have our opinions matter, so we gotta show up.”

“Local elections are probably the elections that affect us the most,” said Minneapolis resident David Hutcheson. “If you don’t show up, your city government doesn’t necessarily represent you.”
