Native Americans once again protest Washington NFL team name

Native Americans held protests in 1992 and 2014 before Thursday night.

At South High School in Minneapolis, social studies teacher Vincent Patton shares his experience.

"Being a Native American man I have experienced racism," said Patton.

This is why he will be protesting Washington's Football team name when they play the Vikings Thursday night.

"From my understanding the word 'redskins' you can see is a dictionary defined racial slur," said Patton.

For decades Native American's have protested Washington's name.

The first large protest was during the 1992 Super Bowl when Washington played Buffalo at the Metrodome.

Then again in 2014 outside TCF Bank Stadium when the Vikings played Washington.

"We hope to exceed those numbers at U.S. Bank Stadium," said David Glass with the National Coalition Against Racism in Sports and Media. "It's time for Dan Snyder to open up his ears, open up his heart and hear our message and to move it along and lets come up with another name," said Glass.

A Washington team spokesperson did not comment on the protest.

Vincent will continue to spread his message.

"My hope is when my students have grandchildren we will not have this protest. The name will be done. It will changed," said Patton.
