INTERNATIONAL FALLS, Minn. — The National Park Service says an aquatic invasive species known as the Chinese Mysterysnail has been confirmed in Kabetogama Lake in Voyageurs National Park.

The snails were first collected from the lake in September, and recently confirmed as the invasive species.

According to the Minnesota Sea Grant, the snails tend to outcompete native species for both food and habitat in lakes and other waterways. The snails are also known to be hosts for parasites that can kill waterfowl.

According to a news release from the National Park Service, there is currently no known management option to remove the snails from a lake once an infestation has been discovered.

The Park Service also reminds boaters to follow Minnesota's aquatic invasive species laws, which include recommendations for properly cleaning and draining watercraft to avoid the spread of invasive species.

Voyageurs is Minnesota's only National Park, located near International Falls along the Canadian border. The state is also home to two National Monuments and two National Rivers.
