WEATHER: Snow moves in late Wednesday night

Snow picks up Thursday early morning with up to half a foot in some areas across the region.

MINNESOTA, USA — Wednesday is a cool and quiet day ahead of the system on Thursday. Expect highs in the low to mid 20s with partly sunny skies.

Our first real significant snow is on its way Thursday and it's likely the first day of the season many of us will have to bust out the snowblower. That's why we have issued a KARE 11 Weather Impact Alert for Thursday.

The first band of snow is set to move in around 3 a.m. and could bring moderate to heavy snow with it. Expect roads to quickly deteriorate quickly and it will likely be a slow drive in to work Thursday.

The heavy band of snow is expected throughout the morning hours until around noon when things are expected to shift over to a lighter snow. This will give the plows a chance to play catch up with lighter accumulations expected on the second half of the day.

After 4 p.m., snow should taper off to flurries and continue to wind down Thursday night.

The best chance of plowable snow (four inches or more) is in areas along I-94 north up to the Brainerd lakes area. With the quick movement of this low, it's unlikely to see major totals over eight inches but it should be enough to break out the shovels for most of us.

Colder conditions return by the weekend with teens for forecast highs. However, a strong warming trend is expected as we head into the week of Christmas. Looking this far out, we're not expecting any big weather systems around the holiday.
