MINNESOTA, USA — Our first real significant snow is on its way Thursday, and it's likely the first day of the season that many of us will have to bust out the snowblower. That's why we have issued a KARE 11 Weather Impact Alert.
The National Weather Service has issued various winter headlines for much of the region. A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the Twin Cities metro from midnight Thursday through midnight Friday.
The main band of snow is set to move in around 3 a.m. and could bring moderate to heavy snow with it for the morning commute. Expect road conditions to deteriorate quickly. This will be an all-snow event.
While the heaviest snow is forecast for the morning, snow showers will linger into the afternoon which means slippery conditions may persist into the evening commute.
The best chance of plowable snow (four inches or more) is in areas along and north of I-94. With the quick movement of this low, it's unlikely to see major totals over eight inches, but it should be enough to break out the shovels for most of us.
There will be a sharp cutoff on the south side of this system. That line is currently forecast just south of the Twin Cities metro.
Colder conditions return by the weekend with teens for forecast highs. However, a strong warming trend is expected as we head into the week of Christmas. Looking this far out, we're not expecting any big weather systems around the holiday.
