Messy road conditions as spring snowstorm arrives in Minnesota

Rapidly falling snow, coupled with temperatures around freezing and low visibility, will make travel harder as the storm progresses Sunday into Monday.

MINNEAPOLIS — Take extra caution if you're on the move Sunday, as spinouts and crashes are beginning to plague drivers traveling through the winter storm currently moving across the region.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol (MSP), from 12 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., there were 328 crashes, including 17 with injuries. An accident Sunday afternoon on Interstate 35 near Burnsville was deemed fatal.  The state patrol also reported 220 vehicle spinouts and 10 jackknifed semis.

Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) traffic cameras showed several accidents along metro roads Sunday morning and afternoon, while the agency's statewide travel and road condition website showed, as of 2 p.m., many major highways to the west of the Twin Cities were completely covered by snow.

Meteorologist Mace Michaels said snow could start falling at a rate of 1"-2" per hour as the storm ramps up. Rapidly falling snow, coupled with temperatures around freezing and low visibility, will make travel harder as the storm develops into Sunday evening and overnight.
