ST PAUL, Minn. — A man is charged with murder after his girlfriend was found dead inside her downtown St. Paul apartment Friday.
Kelvin Maurice Perry is charged with second-degree murder after police found a woman unresponsive with signs of trauma while conducting a welfare check. Perry is currently being treated at a hospital after stepping out in front of a light rail train in St. Paul, according to court documents.
Police were called Friday for a welfare check at an apartment building on the 300 block of Cedar Street in St. Paul. When officers arrived, they found the victim lying face down beneath a blow-up mattress in the bedroom, according to the criminal complaint. Investigators say she had small cuts on her forearms, back, and shoulders, and had trauma to her head. Her fake fingernails were also bent backward as if she had been "scratching at something during a struggle," prosecutors say. Officers also found a broken wine bottle and glass shards near the victim's body. The medical examiner said the victim died of asphyxia.
According to the criminal complaint, Perry called a woman who knew him late Friday morning and was "crying and panicking." The complaint goes on to say that he said, "Something is going on. My girlfriend is gone — she is dead." Court documents say Perry then told the woman he loved her and asked her to tell his sister that he loved her. About two minutes later, Perry walked in front of the light rail train, court documents say.
Investigators also interviewed a friend of the victim, who had spoken to the victim on a video call earlier in the morning. The friend said the victim was crying and a man was repeatedly yelling at the victim in the background. When the friend asked what was wrong, the victim said that Perry was mad at her because she spent the night with her husband, who she was separated from, because she was in the emergency room because of her son's asthma. The friend also said they didn't notice anything wrong with the victim's face during the video call.
