Teen killed, another injured in Brooklyn Park shooting

Police were called to the 7200 block of Zane Ave. N just after 5 p.m. and found two male victims down. One, 16-year-old Diriye Abdi Muhumed, did not survive.

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — One young man is dead and another is hospitalized with critical injuries following a shooting Tuesday evening in Brooklyn Park.

Police were dispatched to the 7200 block of Zane Avenue North just after 5 p.m. on a report of a shooting. When officers arrived they found two juveniles who had been shot. Despite lifesaving efforts, 16-year-old Diriye Abdi Muhumed of Brooklyn Park died at the scene while the other was transported to a hospital with critical injuries.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office says Muhumed died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Precinct Inspector Elliot Faust told KARE 11 Wednesday morning that the teen is "clinging to life." He added that a large contingent of detectives is actively working the case and trying to find those responsible.

Brooklyn Park Police said in a news release late Tuesday that several suspects fled the scene on foot following the shooting. Officers conducted what they call a "comprehensive" search of the area but were not able to locate the shooter or shooters.

Investigators believe there were several individuals in the area of 73rd and Zane Avenue North when the shots were fired and may have witnessed what happened. They are encouraging anyone with information on the fatal shooting or those responsible to call Brooklyn Park PD at 763-493-8222.
