ST PAUL, Minn. — A 16-year-old pleaded guilty to underage possession of a gun after police found the student with a handgun inside Central High School Monday afternoon.
According to the Ramsey County Attorney, probationary conditions were imposed due to the fact the teen had no criminal history. The conditions of the teen's probation include 30 days of electric home monitoring, 40 hours of community service, and completing a mental health screening.
Police responded to Central High School just before 2:30 p.m. Monday afternoon on a report of a student with a gun. When officers arrived, they were shown a picture of the student from social media, according to court documents. The juvenile petition says the background in the picture appeared to show that it was taken on school property, and school staff confirmed the teen was wearing the same clothing.
Officers and school personnel went to the teen's classroom, and when the student was asked to exit the classroom, the teen ran down the hallway. The student was eventually detained and police found a handgun in the teen's pants. After a serial number search, police were able to determine that the handgun was stolen.
A spokesperson for Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) says this is the fourth gun that has been recovered from a student inside one of their schools, and the second time in Central High School.
During the 2022-23 school year, the district says five guns were recovered, and during the 2021-22 school year, seven guns were recovered.
