ST PAUL, Minn. — A 33-year-old man "suffered wounds from a knife" after he allegedly tried taking a Morrison County Sheriff's deputy's gun during a scuffle Saturday night following a traffic stop.

According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the suspect got into a scuffle when Morrison County Sheriff's deputy Axel Lange attempted to arrest him for speeding and suspected driving while intoxicated around 10:30 p.m. Saturday. In a press release, the BCA said the suspect pulled away when Lange tried putting handcuffs on him.

The two began to "scuffle," and at one point, the release says the suspect tried to take Lange's handgun. Lange told BCA investigators that he wasn't able to get to draw his gun, so he used his knife. The BCA said the knife was recovered at the scene.

The release says Lange and other responding officers provided life-saving care before the suspect was transported to a hospital where he remains in "stable" condition, according to the BCA.

Lange has six years of law enforcement experience, and is currently on critical incident leave. The BCA says portions of the incident were captured on Lange's body-worn camera and squad car cameras.
