Brooklyn Park police officer who shot man during baby's death investigation returns to duty

Police said the officer shot a man while police investigated the death of an infant in June.

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — A Brooklyn Park police officer is back on full active duty two months after he shot a man while officers investigated the death of an infant.

On June 23, officers were called to a house on the 8700 block of Queens Garden North for reports of a 7-month-old not breathing. Officials said about 40 minutes after the death investigation began, the father of the baby was shot by an officer and injured.

Officer-worn body cam video was posted to YouTube by the department Thursday, showing the moments leading up to the shooting.

The video shows a person forcefully opening a locked bedroom door before approaching a closet in which the child's father had entered. With police also in the room, the video shows the unidentified person having an exchange with the shooting victim about possessing a firearm. That's when the video shows officers trying to intervene before the father is seen holding a gun and shots are subsequently heard.

In a news release published Thursday, Brooklyn Park police say the officer, Momodou Dibba, was placed on administrative leave after the incident. An internal investigation found Dibba "did not violate any department policies regarding the use of deadly force." Dibba was placed back on active duty on Aug. 22, the news release said.

Brooklyn Park police said the bodycam video was also shown to the chief's Multi-Cultural Advisory Team, which is made up of community members. Officials said this group agreed no police department policies were violated.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the shooting, according to the news release. The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the baby's death.
