CRANE LAKE, Minnesota — Investigators in northern Minnesota said a man died in a reported drowning near Voyageurs National Park on Sunday.

In a news release, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office said the 50-year-old man from Embarrass, later identified as William Rebarich, was participating in a recovery operation for sunken machinery on Crane Lake, just outside the Voyageurs National Park boundaries. Investigators said Rebarich failed to resurface after a lengthy period underwater. Rescuers later pulled his body from the lake and brought him to shore, where he was pronounced dead.

According to the sheriff's office, Rebarich was a trained SCUBA diver, but was not officially affiliated with any recovery or transport company.

The Midwest Medical Examiner's Office will determine a specific cause of death.
