GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — Health officials confirm second presumptive case of coronavirus in Minnesota

The Minnesota Department of Health confirmed Sunday a second presumptive positive case of novel coronavirus in the state. The case is travel related and it involves a resident of Carver County in their 50s who was likely exposed to COVID-19 while traveling in Europe in late February, according to MDH. The patient developed symptoms on March 2 and sought medical help on March 7. Samples were collected from the person and sent to the MDH Public Health Laboratory for testing and the test was found positive late Sunday afternoon, officials said. As with the first presumptive coronavirus case in Minnesota, MDH is awaiting additional testing from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The patient is in isolation at home and recovering.

Police in Cloquet have located a man accused of killing a 27-year-old woman and her 18-month-old son after an extensive manhunt. According to a social media post from the Cloquet Police Department, authorities located and arrested Sheldon James Thompson at 8:43 p.m. on Sunday. Police say Thompson was found in a wooded area off Mission Road in Perch Lake Township in Carlton County on the Fond du Lac Reservation. He was taken into custody with help from a Minnesota State Patrol helicopter and a K-9 from the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office. A citizen called police Saturday afternoon and requested a welfare check on a woman and child "in the City of Cloquet on the Fond du Lac Indian Reservation," according to a news release. Officers checked the home "but were unable to contact or see anyone inside." Police got a search warrant on Sunday and officers found the bodies of a 27-year-old woman and an 18-month-old boy inside the house, located in the 1600 block of Locke Lane. Police say Thompson and the victims "had a relationship or otherwise knew each other." The names of the victims are being withheld until the family is notified.

North Minneapolis barber is a catalyst on his corner

88-year-old Willie Thurman (left) shares a moment with barber Houston White.

Barber Houston White is equal parts mentor and entrepreneur, calling his North Minneapolis barbershop the black man's country club. Houston owns this club, HWMR (which once stood for Houston White Men's Room) a barber shop that's become much more. Houston's wheels are turning, even as he works his scissors, dreaming about what his corner could become. Houston was 29 in 2008 when he purchased the building on the corner of 44th and Humboldt, previously occupied by a coffee shop. On any given evening, Houston’s barber shop could be playing host to a concert, an art show, or any number of politicians or speakers. A pinned-up photo shows a visit from Governor Tim Walz. In another, Houston is sharing a laugh with Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey and Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo. It’s a place where two elementary school boys from the neighborhood – one a comic book writer, the other a bow tie designer – could set up a pop-up shop under Houston’s watchful eyes to sell their wares.
