MPD announces memorial service for fallen Officer Jamal Mitchell

The memorial will take place Tuesday, June 11, at 11 a.m. at Maple Grove High School. Police said details about the service will be released over the coming days.

MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis police announced Thursday a memorial will be held next week for MPD officer Jamal Mitchell, who was shot and killed in the line of duty late last month.

MPD said the memorial will take place Tuesday, June 11, at 11 a.m. at Maple Grove High School. Police said details about the service will be released over the coming days.

Mitchell's watch ended on Thursday, May 30, while responding to a call about gunfire in Minneapolis' Whittier neighborhood. When he arrived on the scene, authorities said he approached a gunshot wound victim, who would end up firing multiple rounds at Mitchell, ultimately killing him. The shooter, Mustafa Mohammed, was also killed.

On Thursday, Mitchell's longtime partner Tori Myslajek released the following statement:

Our family is completely devastated by our recent loss. Jamal was our whole world. His greatest joys in life were his children: Koen, 20, Jalen, 9, Kaden, 7 and little Macen, 4. Jamal and I created a beautiful life in Minnesota, and he was deeply passionate about helping and serving the community of Minneapolis. On behalf of our family and from the bottom of my heart, I want to thank our friends, neighbors, loved ones and the entire community for the continued support.

A GoFundMe was created to help support Mitchell's family. Anyone interested in donating can visit the campaign here.

As of Thursday morning, more than $80,000 had already been collected toward its $100,000 goal.
