POLK COUNTY, Minnesota — Law enforcement has identified a man who was shot and killed while officers served an arrest warrant at a home in northern Minnesota Tuesday.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) said pathology officials at the University of North Dakota identified 42-year-old Lucas Paul Gilbertson of rural East Grand Forks as the man who was shot. The officer who fired the fatal shot is a member of the Pine to Prairie Drug Task Force, and will not be identified as he works in an undercover capacity.
BCA investigators say the drug task force learned on Jan. 9 that Gilbertson, who was wanted on a warrant, would be at a residence in East Grand Forks. They arrived at the home just before noon and surrounded it so Gilbertson could not escape.
At some point during the incident, the BCA says the undercover officer entered the home and encountered Gilbertson, firing his taser and then multiple shots from his handgun. Investigators say during the encounter the suspect broke a window and threw his own gun outside. Crime scene team members later found the handgun on the ground outside the residence.
The BCA says officers on the scene provided emergency care for Gilbertson until paramedics arrived to take him to the hospital, where he would die of his injuries.
While other officers on the scene did capture body and squad car video of some parts of the incident, there is no tape of the shooting itself as the undercover officer was not wearing a camera.
Once the BCA completes its investigation the agency's findings will be handed off to the Polk County Attorney for a decision on potential charges.
